When to Use JSON Diff

JSON diff is essential when you need to compare API responses before and after a code change, review configuration changes in files like package.jsonor Terraform state, or validate database migrations by comparing document snapshots.

How Changes Are Displayed

• Added keys — keys present in the right JSON but not in the left, highlighted in green
• Removed keys — keys present in the left JSON but missing from the right, highlighted in red
• Changed values — same key exists in both, but the value differs, highlighted in yellow with old → new values
• Unchanged keys — identical in both objects, shown without highlighting

Structural vs Text Comparison

Unlike line-by-line text diff, JSON diff is structure-aware: it ignores key ordering and whitespace differences. Two JSON objects with the same keys and values in different order are considered identical. This makes it ideal for comparing API payloads where serialization order may vary.
